Foxfire is an environmentally conscious restaurant. We do what we can to be a responsible business that’s helps protect the environment. For example, we serve paper straws rather than plastic straws with our beverages. Read on for a quick look at the advantages of using paper straws.

Paper or Plastic? A Few Benefits to Using Paper Straws

It’s becoming clear in recent years that the use of plastic straws is an important issue that calls for attention. In response, more and more restaurants are converting to paper straws. However, are they really easier on the environment? Here’s a few reasons why paper is the way to go when it comes to that reliable beverage companion.

-Paper straws are biodegradable. Even when we toss away plastic straws into the nearest recycling bin, it still likely they wind up in a landfill. Once there, it takes years for them to decompose. In contrast, paper straws are wholly compostable and biodegradable. Even if they end up somewhere in an ocean, they’ll begin to break down within a matter of days. Paper straws simply take a fraction of the time that plastic does to decompose. Without a doubt, plastic products can require centuries to completely decompose in a landfill.

-Plastic is often more likely to end up in the ocean. It’s there when plastic eventually breaks apart into small micro-plastics which fish and sea life ingest. Unlike plastic straws, paper straws decompose back into the ground within just a month or so.

-Converting to paper straws serves to reduce the usage of plastic straws. Worldwide use of plastic straws is pretty amazing. Some estimates put the daily use of straws in the millions. That’s enough straws fill about 45,000 buses every year. Over the last 20 years, clean-up efforts across the nation removed over six million straws annually. Selecting paper straws instead of plastic can lessen this harmful impact significantly.

-Paper straws are more affordable. As more supply companies and restaurants become aware of the impact of plastic straws, demand is rising. Still, they remain relatively inexpensive for businesses to purchase in bulk.
